Our Mission

CalorieCalculator.uk was created to provide UK residents with a free, accurate, and easy-to-use calorie calculator that aligns with NHS guidelines. We believe everyone deserves access to quality health tools without paying subscription fees or navigating confusing interfaces.

Our calculator helps you estimate your daily calorie needs for weight loss, maintenance, or muscle gain using scientifically-validated formulas and UK-friendly units like stones and pounds.

Unlike many calorie calculators online, we specifically follow the NHS recommendation of a 600 kcal/day deficit for safe, sustainable weight loss of 0.5–1 kg per week. Our calculations use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which research published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found to be the most accurate for estimating resting metabolic rate.

Our Evidence-Based Approach

Scientific Formulas

We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990) as our default formula, which studies show predicts actual resting metabolic rate within 10% for most adults. We also offer Harris-Benedict (1919, revised 1984) and Katch-McArdle for users who know their body fat percentage. Each formula is fully explained so you understand how your results are calculated.

NHS Guidelines Integration

Our weight loss recommendations follow NHS Choices guidance: a deficit of approximately 600 kcal per day to achieve a safe loss of 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lbs) per week. We never recommend going below 1,400 kcal/day for women or 1,900 kcal/day for men without noting the need for medical supervision, in line with NHS advice.

Transparent Methodology

Every calculation is explained with the actual mathematical formula used. We show the activity multipliers applied to your BMR, cite peer-reviewed research where applicable, and clearly state the limitations of calorie estimation. No black boxes — you can verify our maths yourself.
